Oh hey.

It's been awhile.  I've had a busy past few days to say the least.  What have I been up to?  Well...

We said goodbye to our interns with a smashing Farewell Dinner on Thursday night.  We went to Eno's in the Bishop Arts District and it was de-li-cious!  This is also where I discovered my affinity for the Beer Float.  Instead of Rootbeer, pour a little Moose Drool (chocolate beer) over a scoop of ice cream and its quite fabulous.

After a long night of eating, drinking, listening to music, socializing, eating some more, and playing darts, we called it a night and headed back to the office where a select group of about 20 troopers headed upstairs for some 'after-hours fun.'  In an effort to avoid incriminating anyone, I'll forgo dishing out the deets and just leave it at: it was a grand old time.

Friday was the interns' actual last day and they were so sweet to get all the recruiting girls a 'thank you' gift:

these are some of the people who made my summer at work so fun.

awesome candle.

Friday night I went to dinner/drinks/movie with some girls from the office.  If you haven't seen "The Help" yet, you need to make plans to do so now.  It is such an awesome film.  I laughed and cried all in the same scene and walked away with such a good feeling.  This movie gets five stars from me!

Saturday held the usual brunch (this time at Primos!) and then an exciting first for me, an FC Soccer Game:

Taylor, Alan, and I scored these awesome tickets for sideline seats, a hotdog, and a drink for $20.00 bucks!  Being that this rounded out my completed set of Dallas sporting events, I was super pumped to find such a great deal.

Best. Hotdog. Ever.

Can you tell from our faces we were hot, sweaty, and tired?!  Yes.

I rounded out the evening by walking to get drinks with a friend.  One of my favorite parts of living where I do?  Being in walking distance from House of Blues, Dick's Last Resort, and a few other notable restaurants and bars.  It's awesome.

Today was the typical Sunday for me.  Although I woke up and got ready for church just to realize there was no way I was ever going to make it on time :: which is a bummer :: that just meant I had even more time to spend with my family!  I headed to my parents' house for a little In-and-Out Burger, naptime, and pool with my sister.  One of my favorite things about visiting my parents (besides actually seeing them, of course!) is the delicious home-cooked meal I'm sure to get and all the goodies I get sent home with.  Today's meal of choice was brisket and baked potatoes.  Yum.  I also got sent home with a week's worth of fruit:

I'm so spoiled by my awesome mother :)

After a Sunday night softball practice and doing a few things around the house, I am absolutely beat!  Here's to hoping I can make it an early night for once!

Bon Appetit

'Master Chef' is everything but what I am.  In all honesty, I'm horrible at cooking.  Besides the fact that I don't enjoy it and think it's a waste of time, I've stooped so low as to have burned Campbell's soup not once, not twice, but three times in my life.  I get a little impatient, crank it up too high, and end up spending an hour scouring my scorched pot afterwards.  It's pathetic.

So a couple weeks ago when we hosted an office event at this Cooking School in Dallas, I was less than thrilled.  I figured I would not only embarrass myself in front of my co-workers with my severe lack of cooking skills, but I would also have a miserable evening.

I was wrong.  So wrong.  The whole evening was so legit.  We kicked off the event with a cocktail hour complete with yummy hor devours.  If you've been following my blog, you'll see that placing food and BCGers together seems to be a nice trend.  I'm not complaining.

Cocktails and Hor devours.

One of the cooking teams.

The judges.

My cooking team!!

Following this we broke into our respective teams and engaged in an 'Iron Chef-esque' competition.  We had four "mystery" ingredients, a few staples to choose from, and a fairly limited number of cooking utensils.  We had 45 minutes to make our master piece.

Running concurrently to this was our Shaker Competition.  Acknowledging that I lack talent in the kitchen, I volunteered myself for this aspect of the challenge.  A few members from each team headed into a separate room we had well stocked with every liquor, mixer, and drink ingredient imaginable.  The plan was to come up with a creative, tasty, complimentary drink to be paired with the meal the remainder of our team was creating.

So what did we come up with?  Pure deliciousness on all fronts, that's what!  For our meal, my team made a stuffed bell pepper with flat iron steak marinated in some special sauce one of the chefs cooked up.  Our drink was going to be some scrumptious tequila/vodka/pineapple/lemon/lots of other random stuff mixture until someone accidently dumped out our shaker and we had to start over with five minutes to spare.  Erring on the side of caution, we went with a simple vodka/lemon/soda mix.  Thanks to Laura for making a nice display, the presentation (and taste!) of it proved a solid showing.

The Smileys.  Chef and Drinks Master.

We clearly should have won.  We even gave a nod to our company!

We didn't win - bummer - but it was a close call I'm sure ;)  Other notable favorites from the evening included a corn chowder, stuffed fried avocados, and mini tacos as well as a variety of delicious drinks.

After the competition we sat down to a great Italian dinner complete with, my favorite, Tiramisu!!  The dessert was served in these little crystal cocktail glasses and had it not been a work event and had I not been hosting, I definitely would have indulged in two.  Or five.  They were that good.

Obviously it was a great night.  We even got BCG aprons as party favors and nothing beats a party with take-aways!  Although I probably won't be jumping into the kitchen to whip up my own stuffed bell pepper anytime soon, it was definitely a very fun experience!  Until tomorrow...bon appetit!

PROs and CONs

CON: I stayed at work until 9:30 tonight...

PRO: I have a beautiful view of Dallas from the terrace by my desk:

CON: I haven't gone to bed before 2:30am in the past week and a half...

PRO: It's because I was doing cool things like hanging out with my best friend, Carrie:

CON: We lost our softball game last night...

PRO: It was probably because we played Flip Cup at our sponsor bar beforehand...

The PROs and CONs, the Ups and Downs, the Good and Bad...such is life :)

Nostalgia.

As promised, here is the re-cap of the second half of my weekend.  Sunday morning we woke up, packed up, and trudged our way to the "Fish Camp part of Lakeview."  It was honestly really weird coming back; buildings have changed, Lakeview staff has changed, things are done differently, and it wasn't the warmest reception I've ever received.  It was also really weird that they were welcoming the class of 2015!!  I felt old.

Past Directors are typically invited back for a weekend as a thank-you for all their hard work the previous year and to give them the opportunity to experience and appreciate Fish Camp while (finally!) having absolutely no responsibility whatsoever.  When you get to the Director level in this organization, Fish Camp truly becomes a part of who you are so it's really nice to be able to come back, see it in action, and see how it's grown since you've let it go.  This year we were invited back for a meal (I was hoping and crossing my fingers that it would be the chicken fingers and mashed potatoes - yum - but it twas not - bummer).

We started the day by visiting the new and improved Copeland.  It is so nice.  And so large.  And so clean.  Although I really miss the old Copeland and all the memories made there (singing 'Sweet Caroline' with the other Directors while mopping the floor after Yell Practice and having the Session G Rave), it was really cool to see the awesome improvements Lakeview is making to better equip Fish Camp!

After Copeland, we headed to the Cafeteria for a little taste of Lakeview's finest.  It was chicken (surprise!) sandwiches and just as delicious as I remembered.  We saw some familiar Lakeview staff, fulfilled our long-standing craving with a little Iceberry Blue, and even fielded a question from a freshman! (I love feeling needed...)

Lakeview cafeteria.  Oh how I will miss your chicken strips and mashed potatoes...

Next we went to the Staff House where we recalled all the fabulous (and not-so-fabulous) memories we spent all of last year making there.  Between the three or four different trips we took to LV as Directors (not to mention the entire month that we all lived there last summer), that little cabin proves to be quite the nostalgia bank.

Mine and Carrie's room from last year.

Our home last summer!  Director Staff 2010, what up!

Because it wouldn't be us without also taking a stupid picture.

Next we travelled to all the different camp rooms.  It was really cool seeing all the rooms that, albeit dirty and gross and cramped and often small, hold so much significance and love for me!  I grew so much as a person and as a leader in these rooms.  My life was changed in these rooms.  And in each of these rooms I became a stronger and a better Aggie.  Here are a few snapshots (I won't bore you with all) of the rooms:

We were all purple at one point!  Pampell 07, Donnell 07,  Byrd 07.  Although the room was situated completely differently when we were purple counselors, it's where we all got our counselor start!

Staff 2009 blue chairs.  Sharp 09, Brocksmith 09, Aikens 09.  Uhh whoop!
Who knew when we set up our camproom as chairs so long ago that two years later we'd be coming back together as best friends and previous Directors?!

In the midst of visiting camp rooms and experiencing some serious nostalgia as well as engaging in copious amounts of picture taking, we stopped by Headquarters and ate an Icee Pop.  Or two.  Or for fatties like Tom, three!  It was great to see some familiar faces and great to meet the new ones.  We, as Directors, spent SO much time with CREW and got to know (and rely on!) last year's CREW so well.  As with everything else, HQ send a flood of memories reeling back!

Icee Pops never taste as good as at Lakeview.  I literally lived off of these last summer...

We spent a good majority of the rest of the afternoon hanging out in the Red Room talking to JLaw and Paige.  (Yes, its so precious that mine and Tom's babies are now partners...).  I think, besides being with my Directors/best friends, that seeing one of my precious first year counselors in action as a Chair of his own camp was one of the most special times of the whole day.  You realize time has seriously flown by when you see the guy who, being that he had never been to camp as a <><, got lost going to the Cafeteria on Day One, and is now leading his counselors and freshmen like he was born to do it.  Shout out to my counselor love, John Taylor: so proud of you and your awesome Camp Nussbaum!

Brocksmith + Sharp = Nussbaum

My baby is all grown up! (He'd probably like for me to stop calling him my baby sometime soon considering he's 21 and a Senior in college now...but nope!  I knew him as a wee little freshman.)

Where all the magic happened.  Camp Sharp love.

After watching some skits, roaming the grounds a bit more, and realizing yet again that we are now so old, we topped off our afternoon with a little perusal through and nap in Copeland.  As Directors you tend to spend more time in Copeland than you would care to so, in spite of the fact that you associate Copeland with watching the same program 500 times, you end up finding it a very endearing and comforting place.  It also holds a barrel of memories for us (karaoking on the stage, country dancing in the box, teaching my entire session a dance during the Welcome, and watching the freshmen truly come out of their shells and lead yells during Adjustments).

Here's to you, Copeland!

As the afternoon wrapped up, we said our goodbyes, gave the new Directors their gifts, and gave Lakeview our final farewell.  As is tradition, we stopped at the sign on the way out to take picture #230483 - although this time with tears streaming down our faces (ok, maybe just mine and Carrie's...).

It was really hard coming back, especially being that it lacked the welcoming, loving, fully embracing experience I had so looked forward to since our departure last year.  It was honestly quite disappointing and, with the exception of one or two people, a bit of a slap in the face.  But I think, besides that, it was really good for us.  I think it helped to push me into appreciating the fact that I don't need to come back anymore.  Although I'm excited for the future of Fish Camp and all improvements they are making and will continue to make, I would much rather preserve my memory of Fish Camp and Lakeview as I know it now...with sweat soaked Copeland floors on Day Three, scorpions coming up through the shower drain in the back Staff House bathroom, the old rickety switchboard in the Sound Box that made for a fun guessing game when turning out the lights or on the sound, and the bumps in the road, now filled in, that provided for such a fun ride when you were lucky enough to ride shotgun with Jay on Rackety Blackety.

Of course I will always cherish Fish Camp and I will also hold so very dear all the friends who turned into family, the life lessons who made me who I am, and the memories I will take with me for the rest of my life.  It's an odd feeling and an odd realization knowing you can never go back to something.  But our limited time on Sunday just proved to show me that it's not about Lakeview as a physical place, because that is always changing.  It's about holding on to five years of memories through friendships,  pictures, and realizing how much an organization can truly change your life.

Disco Cabs and Biker Bars

This weekend held so many wonderful adventures.  So many, in fact, that my re-cap will have to be cut in two.  This is also because I refuse to group alcohol and Fish Camp in the same post...yes, still.  What can I say?  I'm an avid rule follower.

My best friend, Carrie (read about her HERE) came into town on Friday.  She moved to Maine a month or so ago and even though she lived in Texas before that, we haven't lived in the same city since December - so you can imagine how much I've been missing her!

We spent Friday night catching up, getting dinner and drinks with friends at Primos, and galavanting around the Uptown night life.  My favorite part of the evening, however, came when it was time to grab some grub before heading home.  I wanted to stop at this little pizza place I had happened upon the previous weekend and being that it was across town, we hailed a cab.  And not just any old cab pulled up...but much to our delight, we had unknowingly signaled the Disco Cab!  Complete with blinking neon lights and a disco ball dangling from the ceiling, it was the perfect transportation to our after-hours dining location.  Although he actually took us to the wrong pizza parlor (which was not as good, albeit cheaper), it was a fun time.

We ended up walking about 20 blocks home (which is no fun in 5 inch heels, let me tell you) but being the frugalites that we are, we weren't about to dish out more dough for another party ride.

See below for photographic evidence of our Friday night:

We got the matchy-matchy thing going.

Disco Cab!  Being that the flash was on, you can't see the blinking neon lights - but trust me, they were legit.

So blurry because I removed the flash - but just proof of all the awesome lights!

Saturday Carrie and I got up early to head to Palestine, Texas.  Although we didn't quite leave on time and made several stops along the way, we finally made it to Lakeview to meet up with our fellow Directors, Amanda and Tom.  We had rented a cabin on the property for the evening which was great because it was actually in the same area we stayed the first time we all stayed at Lakeview as a Director Team.  Dose of nostalgia, anyone?

We spent a good three hours catching up on our lives, filling in all the little details to the big stories we already knew about each other, and reminiscing on all of our Lakeview memories.  We then travelled to our favorite Palestine restaurant, El Toro!  ::snaps fingers in 'Ole-like fashion::  After dinner we perused Walmart (which also held a surprising amount of memories) and then set out for our night's entertainment venue: The Whistle Stop Saloon in old downtown Palestine.  Upon finding this quaint sketch little dive bar, we promptly ordered a round of beers and then headed straight to the old juke box.  The advertised juke box was honestly the big draw to this bar for us; I swear Carrie and I are grandmas at heart!  After $10.00 worth of songs, a couple rounds of the good stuff, and a lame attempt at playing darts, we figured it was time to leave.  The later and later it got, the sketchier and sketchier it got.  And they didn't seem too keen on hosting 'outsiders.'

Upon arriving back at the cabin and after some small talk and crafting, we headed to bed.  And, yes, in true Director 2010 fashion, we dragged all the beds into one room and had a slumber party in mine and Carrie's room.  Just like old times...le sigh...

See below for photographic evidence of our Saturday night:

Tomothy!

Obviously...the girls.

The beautiful lake view on the backroads of Lakeview!  So many memories made here last year :)

Shady, yet fabulous.

This is probably when the locals started hating us...

We're precious, I know...

I'll write a re-cap on our Fish Camp visit tomorrow!  But Friday and Saturday should be enough to hold ya over for now ;) Until tomorrow...peace out.

How 'bout them COWBOYS

Tonight I lucked into a pretty sweet deal: $10.00 Cowboys vs. Broncos tickets!  For those of you Debbie Downers out there, yes, I know, it was a pre-season game.  And, yes, I know, neither team is all that great right now.  However, Jerry World is always wonderful.  And even more wonderful at a bargain :)

I mean, seriously, my beer cost almost as much as my ticket...ridiculous.

Just a little Stephen McGee action after he led the Boys to a W.

Made me miss Kyle Field...

My best!  Please excuse her Broncos shirt.
Please also excuse my Julius Jones jersey.  Yes, I bought it right before he left the team because it was cheaper and yes, I bought a kid size because they were half the price of the adult ones.  I'm cheap, ok?!

Showing some love for our Aggies: Stephen McGee, Von Miller...

Not a bad way to spend a Thursday night!  We may have had nose bleed seats, I may have maxed out at one beer because they were so expensive, and I may have been wearing a kick-back jersey, but it was definitely a fun-filled, friend-filled, field-filled night :)

Country Fever

So in anticipation of my upcoming trip to the Texas Hill Country and Gruene Hall, and in light of a link to listen to Zane Williams given to me by my friend, Zach, I thought I'd share some of my favorite Texas Country songs that have been frequenting my playlist lately:

"Somewhere Down in Texas" Jason Boland

"Texas Angel" Honebrowne

"Stockyards" Casey Donahew Band

"One Thing" Jack Ingram

"Let the Good Times Roll" Brandon Rhyder
He'll be playing at Gruene Hall while we're there.  Score.

"Taste" Josh Abbott Band

There you have it; some of my very favorite Texas Country songs.  Of course the list goes on and on for another 150 songs or so...but here's just a little taste of the good stuff :)
